Shot down by flak after bombs away on a mission to Erkner, Berlin on 8 Mar 1944, B-24J #42-100342 crashed SW of Brunswick, GR after being abandoned by the crew. Prisoner of War (POW). Our dad was shot down while flying a sortie from England in March of '44. He was captured and imprisoned in Germany in a prison camp for 17 months. He endured some periods of solitary confinement, which he said was the most difficult part. He also developed TB white incarcerated, had teeth removed with no dental equipment or anesthesia, and nearly starved to death. He had to walk to France at the end of the war. This almost killed him, but he survived to be shipped back home,
