Attacked by fighters on a mission to Augsburg, GR on 16 Mar 1944, B-17G #42-31262 'Ole Smoke' crashed E of Stuttgart, GR after nine of crew bailed out, Prisoner of War (POW).



Earlier on 18 October 1943 on a recalled mission, the engine of B-17 #42-3526 caught on fire forcing the crew to bail out over south coast of England. Pilot Sabel was one of 4 crewmen who was hospitalized. All crew returned.
