Earlier July 4, 1944 on mission to Tours, FR in B-17 42-107114 when engine trouble led to an out of control fire over the Channel. Crew returned to England releasing bombs in a field in Sussex. Crew bailed out. 10 RTD.

Engine fire

4 July 1944 On 4 July 1944, Tours mission bad weather intervened and no bombs were dropped. On the way over the Channel the #2 engine caught fire. The 2000 lbs bombs were released in an open field at West Chillington, Sussex and after the crew had baled out.
