MilitaryShot down 8 October 1943 in B-17 #42-30818 'Salvo Sal', Prisoner of War (POW). Our target was Bremen, after bombing target, heavy flak damage forced us out of formation and then we were attacked by German fighters. Forced to bail out over Friesland, Netherlands. Evaded capture and with help of Neth. Underground, escaped through Holland, Belgium and France to the Pyrenees Mtns, only to caught at the Spanish Border by German Border Patrol. After 4 months on the run, on Feb 6, 1944. spent 2 months in Civilian Jails before being sent to Stalag Luft 1, Barth, Germany. 8th AF B-17s rescued us and flew us from Prisoner of War (POW) camp to Paris in May 1945
