Allen, TX, USA | 29 August 2015 | Fields Hathorn died peacefully in Allen, TX on August 29, 2015 in at the age of 90. Fields was born on July 8th, 1925 in Ravia, OK to Don Kindred Hathorn and Lena Fields Hathorn. He was a second lieutenant in the Army Air corps. as a navigator on a bomber during WWII. He graduated from Oklahoma A & M in 1950 with a B.S. in Music Education. He graduated with a M.A. in Music and EDS degrees from Peabody College in 1960 in Nashville, TN. He married Joan Ingerham that he met during the summer getting graduate hours at Oklahoma A & M in 1955. They had one daughter Mary Beth Hathorn Costello. He taught vocal music in Sentinel, OK, Hooker, OK, Hominy, OK and Alamogordo, NM. He served as music minister at churches across Oklahoma, Nashville, TN, and Alamogordo, NM. He opened Hathorn Cabinet Shop in Alamogordo, NM in 1968 and is still operated today by his nephew Alan Torrey. He is especially proud of the numerous students who pursued music as a career or hobby later in life. Fields was an accomplished entertainer. He sang, played the harmonicas, and did expressive readings. During his college days, he was active with the student entertainers and performed extensively throughout Oklahoma. After college, he continued to perform throughout his life. He helped lead and organize four chapters of the “Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America (S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A)”. He was active in the Kiwanis Club and served as district Lieutenant Governor of the Southwestern United States. He was active in Little Theater in Alamogordo, NM. He was an active and dedicated member of the Friendship Baptist Church in Fairview, TX. and had helped build both of their current building during his retirement. He served as deacon at Calvary Baptist Church, Alamogordo, NM, First Baptist Church, Alamogordo, NM, and Friendship Baptist Church in Fairview, TX. He also served as state vice president of the Baptist Student Union for the State of Oklahoma while he was in college. |
