Edwin L Holmes

Ball-Turret Gunner, 545th Sqdn. 384th Bomb Group, Grafton Underwood, England

Ed was a long-time member of our local 8th Air Force Historical Society chapter, serving for a time as Secretary/Treasurer. He completed 22 missions. On February 23, 1945 his group was part of the massive bomber force launched to bomb Berlin. In route, his bomber was severely damaged and they elected to crash-land in Russia rather than bail out.

Although Russia was our ally, American flyers were treated with suspicion. He was interned for a while but eventually escaped and made his way back to England where he flew four more missions before the end of the war.
