MilitarySN#0795113. Reported to Thurleigh Field, UK for duty with [369] 368 Bomber Squadron on 22 Sept 1944. Pilot [ 368 Bomber Squadron-Heavy] of AC- 43-39031 B-17G on mission to bomb marshaling yards at Bingen-on-the-Rhine at approximately 1312 hours, at 24,000 feet on 29 Dec 1944. According to reports AC was hit just after bombs away. AC was observed with one engine, maybe number 3 smoking and left formation to the right spiraling down. Appeared under control according to other crews. Wide spirals losing altitude. Approximately 8 miles north of target. Three chutes observed by other crews. Crew of nine, 4 KIA, 5 captured and sent to spend rest of war in German POW camps. After the war, Woellner stayed in the Air Force and rose to the rank of Brigadier General. AC according to crew reports later [after war] was hit by flak shell into bomb bay area while doors open and this started a fire center area and radio cabin which quickly spread. Also AC took other hits. All nine crew members bailed out.
