Object Number - UPL 47431 - Edward Massey at Falcon Field on Course 26

Edward Massey (known as Eddie to his fellow pilots, but as Ted later in life) trained on Course 26C at Falcon Field, starting on 9 April 1945 and ending on 10 September 1945.

Eddie had a younger brother, Jack, who was only 4 years old when he was posted - Jack remembers his brother telling him about the different planes and bringing pictures of them home. One of the stories he told his family regularly was how he was hauled over the coals for taking off right alongside another plane.

Alan Dew was his good friend at 4BFTS and they and their wives stayed in touch all their lives. Eddie had two daughters, Linda and Christine, and grandchildren James, Anne, Helen, Rasmus and Christine.

He was active in the administration of the local church, St. Mary’s, Whickham, and they published a tribute to him in the church magazine when he died in 1995. In the tribute, his training is mentioned, and it says that Eddie “was destined for service in the Far East but, before he could be posted, the war ended in Europe and he returned home and never used his training in anger”. However, he never forgot Falcon Field, where he had the time of his life!
