One crew report has Sgt McCutcheon dying by machine gun fire in the radio room. Another crew account by RO Sgt Carano states McCutcheon was attempting to escape the sinking aircraft through a waist gun window. Sgt Carano assisted him into the water. The aircraft went down nose first and as the tail rose in the air, the aircraft broke in two at the ball turret. The tail section fell on Sgt McCutcheon and he was not seen again.
