Forst, Landkreis Altenkirchen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany | 13 March 1945 | Statement from Lieutenant Fred H. Varn: "I was leading the second element of the first flight with Lieutenant Schwartz as my wingman on a 12-ship mission on a dive-bomb run on the marshalling yard at Wissen, Germany. Just after the dive-bomb run, I looked back to check Lieutenant Schwartz´s position and saw that his aircraft was on fire. I called and told him that his ship was burning and to bail out. I received no reply. Right after I called I noticed both of his bombs release. He seemed to be under good control and I called again telling him to bail out and received no reply. After I called the second time, the plane went into a steep bank and then went into a dive and crashed and exploded three miles northwest of the target. I did not see any parachute open." |
