Shot down at Staaken on 9/12/44 in B-17 Dina Mite #4297318 and taken POW. Shot to death on 3/27/45 in Giessen after having been in a Gestapo prison for more than six months. Actual killer never tried. Gestapo man Karl Lösch sentenced to 11 years for "aiding and abetting" in the killing (he had accompanied Nichols and the killer to the place of the crime).
