"Iowans of the Mighty Eighth", Chapter 22 "Biographies", by Charles D Taylor.

Object Number - UPL 31442 - Sergeant Clarence J. Henderson, Ball Turret Gunner, 303rd Bomb Group

Enlisting in the Army Air Corps in September 1941 he was first involved in setting up a new air base at Santa Anna. After a year he volunteered for air crew and went first to Las Vegas to train as an air gunner. With the group at Molesworth he flew on 23 combat missions; his most memorable a mission over Bremen. The pilot urinated into a fuse can, opened a window to empty it, the contents froze on the window and- at the same time- flak set No 2 engine on fire. To put out the fire the pilot put the plane down to 800ft, they managed to release the bombs and get back to base.

Post war he worked for the FMC Corporation in Cedar Rapids.

Air Medal 3 clusters.
