3 miles north of Charleroi, Belgium 18 September 1944 Moreland was wounded by gunfire from a FW 190. He radioed he had been hit in the right arm and leg and was feeling faint and smelled gas in the cockpit. His squadron mates tried to escort him to the nearest airfield, but were separated.
