Charles was recalled to active duty during the Korean War and served as a Staff Officer in a Fighter-Bomber Wing.

In October 1961, it was Charles's job to announce to the enlisted men mid-base party that they were being recalled to active duty and had to assemble at 7.30am the next morning. During the ensuing Cuban Missile Crisis Charles he was a squadron commander in a Troop Carrier Wing.

The Troop Carrier Wing's aircraft were at Ft. Knox, Kentucky but Charles's base was at Milwaukee.

Charles and Helen are Founding Members of the American Air Museum and met the Queen at the dedication ceremony in 1997.
