Burleigh E Curtis
Military ROLL OF HONOURDocumentation for 1.5 kills
His next of kin were his wife, Mrs. Elva Louise Curtis of Medfield, MA, and his parents, Leslie and Lillian Curtis of Holliston, MA.
1Lt. Burleigh Edwards was killed in action near Briouze, France, on 13 June 1944. At the time, he was pilot of P-47D-11 42-75227.
An eyewitness, Captain Loren W. Herway, reported:
"Lt. Curtis was flying Red 3 when his element went down to bomb a bridge over a railroad. He went down too low and was caught in his own bomb blast. He pulled up with white smoke trailing out. I called for him to jump but he was evidently stunned for his plane fell off on the left wing and went straight in and exploded. This took place in the vicinity of Briouze at 2125. Lt. Curtis did not get out of the plane."
French civilians and gendarmes visited the crash site and buried Lt. Curtis beside his plane, marking the grave with a propeller. The remains were later removed to an established American military cemetery.
Lt. Curtis was officially identified and accounted for by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency on 13 December 2018.
