Bruce was a welder at Cedar Rapids when he enlisted in the Army in January 1942. He was to spend 13 months in the infantry before responding to a call for aircrew. He trained initially as a motor mechanic serving for a year at Kingman, Arizona air base as night foreman before volunteering to be an air gunner. His crew joined the 94thBG at Bury St Edmunds in February 1944 where he flew on 15 combat missions. Post VE Day he was posted to Germany as part of the Occupation forces until his discharge in December 1945.
