Arthur C Stanton
MilitaryMy Dad enlisted in April 1942 as an Aviation Cadet. He first attended Pilot Training but due to circumstances, was dropped from Pilot School and sent to Bombardier School at Big Springs, Texas. After completion of school he was awarded his wings and joined Lt Jack Wind's Crew at Aircrew Training. When complete they proceeded to Shipdam Airfield to be assigned to the 506th Squadron and 44th Bomb Group. His aircraft were Southern Comfort II for 24 missions and Consolidated Mess and a few other aircraft for the remainder of his 33 total missions. His first mission was April 8, 1944 at Langenhagen, Germany where they hit an Airdrome. He flew 31 missions with this crew and 2 additional with others crews with his last mission on August 6, 1944 where they hit the Oil Production Facilities in Hamburg, Germany. He returned home sometime later in 1944 where he was assigned as an Bombardier Instructor. In mid 1945 he was assigned to Walla Walla Washington for additional aircrew training in preparation for the invasion of Japan. However before this was completed the war came to an end and he was discharged in 1946. After the war he held a number of executive and Presidential positions with companies like Sperry Gyroscope, RCA Defense Systems, Burns and Roe Services Corporation as well as Granite International. He was married to the former Myra Gilbert in 1946 and had three children. Two of us who are USAF Vietnam Veterans. He passed on Feb. 1st, 1991. He is buried along with Myra in Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, NY.
One note of interest is myself, Keith R Stanton, USAF, was a B52D Crew Chief at U-Tapao RTNAF, Thailand during the Vietnam War. Upon returning home I was assigned as the Primary Crew Chief on B52H Tail Number 60-0034. The tail number of my Dad's primary aircraft, Southern Comfort II, was 42-110034.

I am the son of 1LT Arthur Stanton and my sources are my Dad's personal papers and extensive research by myself and my oldest son Patrick from the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force in Pooler, GA. As for changes, I have added information as to his missions, (first and last) and their dates and mission profile. In addition I added a point of interest as to the relationship of tail numbers of my Dad's airplane and a B52 I was the dedicated Crew Chief on in Strategic Air Command.
