On December 22, 1944, he was serving as a gunner aboard B-17 tail #42-3359 of the 92nd Bomb Group, 327th Bomb Squadron, when it crashed at Rougham, Suffolk.

He is buried at the US Military Cemetery at Cambridge, England.
