Mission Details

DROHOBYCZ

Description: OIL REFINERY

Notes: This mission was not logged as an 8 AF mission but was included because the B-17s carrying out the attack were to be returned to the UK and the 8 AF on 27-Jun-44, but bad weather delays the movement back to the UK until 5-Jul-44. The formation included 72 B-17s flying from Poltava, USSR for a rendezvous with 55 P-51s flying from Piryatin, USSR. All 72 B-17s bomb the target, but one returns to the USSR because of mechanical trouble. The bombers then proceed to Foggia, Italy. An escort of P-51s from 15th AF meets the bomber stream 1 hour after the attack on the refinery. No losses or casualties among the bombers or fighters.
