P-47D-6-RE was assigned to the 355FG/358FS at Steeple Morden, UK. On 4-Oct-43 the aircraft, piloted by 1LT Ralph L. Dean, was despatched along with 223 others to provide escort to B-17 bombers. 355FG was accompanying those attacking at Frankfurt. The airccraft received extensive damage from German fighters but 1LT Dea was able to fly it back to England where he chrahlanded it at Monkton, UK. He was severely injured in the crash and died in hospital a few hours later. No MACR issued for this loss.
