The fireman is identified by his nephew Mr John AW Harris as Firefighter George Chapman stationed with the National Fire Service at Cheshunt, 15 miles north of London. A full account of the crash appears on the 392nd BG Association website. Roger Freeman Collection

This aircraft was brought in to the 492nd from the replacement depot to replace 44-40171 BOOMERANG lost on 19 May 44.

Transferred to the 392nd BG, 577th BS in August

This aircraft transferred to the 392nd Bomb Group (H) from the 492nd Bomb Group (H) after the mission on 6th August 1944. The 492nd, based at North Pickenham, had suffered heavy losses and was effectively wound down after 6th August '44, with remaining aircraft and crew transferred to other units.

12 Aug 44: Lost: mid-air collision during assembly, 7 KIA, 1 WIA, salvaged 13 Aug 44
