Failed to Return (FTR) Bad Hersfeld, Germany 27 September 1944

One of 25 aircraft lost when the 445th Bomb Group (H) separated from the main bomber stream enroute to bomb the Henschel armored fighting vehicle assembly plant in Kassel, Germany. They bombed the town of Göttingen, Germany by mistake due to a navigational and leadership error. A force of appx. 150 German fighters (100 Fw-190's and 50 Bf-109's) made a climbing attack from the 6 o'clock position and shot down 25 planes in less than 5 minutes. MACR #9386
