42-52507 Miss Judy

The Miss Judy was one of the original B-24 liberators in the 789th squadron and was first flown by the the crew under Lt. Gerald Gebauer and was named after Lt. Gebauer's mother. As noted in the crew section of the 467 bomb group archives under crew 35, the crew completed its mission requirement in late July 1944. Showing itself to be a reliable plane it appears it was also flown by the squadron commander on occasion when resting its assigned crew. This seems to be confirmed by 8th Air Force memoirs which list the Miss Judy and show its number of missions before shoot down in excess of those flown by the Gebauer and Hudson crews. Miss Judy was briefly shared by the crew of Lt. Donald Hudson(crew 40 in 467 archives) and Lt. Gebauer before the Gebauer crew went home. Plane was on the Lt. Hudson crew's 22nd mission to Cologne when hit by flak on return. Wing was on fire and at the direction of Ben Bereskin, navigator, crew began to exit as they thought they were back across allied lines. While Ben had been able to mark the frontline on the way in, the Germans had pushed back to the west that morning causing the crew to land in the middle of the German lines near the city of Aachen on the French-German border. The crew thought for a long time that Ben had marked the wrong coordinates, but Ben had been correct, the lines had just moved during their mission. My father was the right waist gunner and stated that they were very much afraid that the plane would come apart and anxious to exit as soon as possible over allied lines. My father was the next to last to exit the Miss Judy with Lt. Donald Hudson the pilot being the last. My father said that the plane continued to fly almost out of sight. Sadly Lt. Hudson was shot at landing. The rest of the crew made it through POW camp at Stalag Luft IV. More available under Elmer J. Barndt.
