B-17 Flying Fortress

B-17G 42-39996 'Boston Bombshell' was delivered Long Beach 29-Oct-43; assigned 322BS/91BG [LG-N] Bassingbourn 14-Jan-44. Attacked by German aircraft on a mission to bomb the aircraft factories at Halle, Germany. Attack caused the left wing to catch fire and the aircraft went into a spin and crashed 330 yards south of the road between Hermannrode and Marzhausen, Germany. KIAs were buried at Hebenhausen, Germany about 1.25 miles south of crash location.7KIA 2POW MACR 8179. Aircraft logged 16 missions

P 2Lt John V. Dunlap (POW); CP F/O Joseph J Cater (KIA)
N 2Lt Herbert B. Carpenter (POW); NG/Toggelier Sgt Leslie D. Algee (KIA)
E/TTG Sgt Vincent N. Beach KIA); RO Sgt Frank J. Simone (KIA)
BTG Sgt Arthur R. Mancino (KIA); WG Sgt John W. Barclay (KIA)
TG Sgt Robert M. Paster (KIA)

NOTE: Roger A Freeman, David Osborne, and Stan Bishop & John A Hey MBE, have this aircraft assigned to 322nd Bomb Squadron. However, MACR 8179 lists the crew as from 324th Bomb Squadron. It is possible that a crew assigned to 324th Bomb Squadron actually flew this aircraft assigned to 322nd Bomb Squadron. For documentation purposes here, that assumption is considered correct.
