Bad Oeynhausen, Germany | 29 July 1944 | Flying in Greenhouse White Three formation with Lt Salman, Lt Merle Allen Jr reported that Lt Daniel Finley, flying as Salman's wingman, reported on the radio that his motor was conked and that he was unable to start it. Finley dropped his combat tanks and headed back toward the base attempting to start his engine. Lt Allen then saw smoke beginning to trail out of 106843, then heard Finley telling him that he was going to bail out. Finley went down to about 8000ft under an overcast and then bailed out. Allen saw his chute opening OK and watched as Finley landed in a tree. Allen dropped low but failed to see Finley again. Allen states that this happened at 09:30 about 5 miles South of Bad Oyenhausen, Germany. |
