Plane was returning from a combat mission with gasoline running low.

As the aircraft passed over the southern coast of England, #1 engine quit due to lack of fuel. Three emergency fields were passed-up then #3 engine quit.

Pilot chose the nearest field for an emergency landing (RAF Staplehurst), but on approach, the right flap struck the top of a telegraph pole, the aircraft crashed immediately into a small spinney.

Crashed: Cranbrook, (Brewers Wood / Hawkridge Farm, 500 yards north of Hartridge House). Kent

1 KIA, 8 RTD – SOC.
