Delivered Cheyenne 30/5/44; Hunter 8/6/44; Dow Fd 24/6/44; Assigned 571BS/390BG [FC-B] Framlingham 29/6/44. Missing in Action Stuttgart 5 September 1944 with Pilot 1st Lt Thomas F. Gallagher, Co-Pilot Captain Alvin W. Jaspers, Navigator: 2nd Lt Daniel Foley Jr, Bombardier: 2nd Lt Victor H. Estes, Flight engineer/top turret gunner: T/Sgt William H. Marra, Radio Operator: T/Sgt Robert E. Miner, Ball turret gunner: S/Sgt James B. Eckman, Waist gunner: S/Sgt Ernst Feibusch, Tail gunner: 2nd Lt Walter L. Underwood (9 INT). Flak KO’d #1 & #4 engines over Stuttgart. The Fortress was seen losing altitude, but under control and following the formation. Last sighted on the west side of the Rhine at 14,000ft. Pilot Gallagher understood they couldn't get back to England and aimed for Switzerland, where he force-landed at the Dubendorf airfield in Switzerland. Crew interned, but officers Gallagher, Estes, Foley, Jaspers and Underwood were back under Allied Military control in September already. Missing Air Crew Report 8456. Returned to the USA 1103 BU Morrison 7 October 1945 - Reconstruction Finance Corporation (sold for scrap metal in USA) Walnut Ridge 8/1/46. BLUES IN THE NIGHT.
